Find Genesee County Court Records

Genesee County court records come from three trial courts in downtown Flint. The 7th Judicial Circuit Court holds felony, large civil, divorce, and family records. The 67th District Court holds misdemeanors, traffic, landlord-tenant, and small claims records. The Probate Court holds estate, guardianship, conservatorship, and mental-health records. To look up Genesee County court records online, the state's MiCOURT portal covers all three, each with a separate court code. Older District Court files have a special rule because of Michigan's Clean Slate law. Certified copies and full case files are pulled from the originating court office.

How to Search Genesee County Court Records

The official portal is MiCOURT Case Search, run by the State Court Administrative Office. The portal does not pool the three Genesee courts into one search. Each court has its own URL. The 7th Circuit Court is code C07. The 67th District Court is code D67. The Genesee County Probate Court is code P25. Open the right URL first.

Have either a case number or a full name ready. Case numbers find a case fast. Common names without a date of birth produce long lists. Public results show case captions, parties, status, hearings, and the Register of Actions. They generally do not include full pleadings or scanned documents. For documents, sealed cases, or older District records, plan on a written request to the proper court office.

  1. Pick the right court URL. Felonies, divorce, and large civil go to C07. Misdemeanors, traffic, small claims, and landlord-tenant go to D67. Estates, guardianships, conservatorships, and mental-health matters go to P25.
  2. Accept the public-access disclaimer and clear the hCaptcha challenge if it appears.
  3. Choose Search Type. Use case number if you have it. Otherwise pick name or business name.
  4. Enter last name, then first name, then date of birth if the field is available. Use case-sensitive spelling for accents and hyphens.
  5. Open a result row to read the case caption, party roles, charges or claims, filing date, and current status.
  6. Click into the Register of Actions for the chronological list of motions, hearings, orders, and dispositions.
  7. For pre-07/31/2014 District Court records, stop in MiCOURT and switch to the 67th District Court records request process, which is required for those older files under Automatic Clean Slate.

Types of Genesee County Court Records

Each Genesee court produces a different mix of records. Civil records cover anything from a divorce decree to a contract suit. Criminal records cover charging instruments, plea forms, sentencing orders, and probation conditions. Traffic records cover civil infractions, OWI cases, license suspensions, and fines. Probate records cover estates, wills, guardianships, conservatorships, and mental-health matters. Family records cover divorce, custody, support, paternity, and personal protection orders.

Different courts produce different documents. A felony case has District Court records up to bindover and Circuit Court records afterward. A divorce involves Circuit family-division pleadings plus possible Friend of the Court support records. An estate sits entirely with Probate Court P25.

  • Felony criminal cases - 7th Circuit Court after bindover from the District Court.
  • Misdemeanor and traffic - 67th District Court, with city-specific divisions in Flint, Burton, Davison, Fenton, Flushing, Grand Blanc, and Mt. Morris.
  • Divorce, custody, PPO - 7th Circuit Court family division.
  • Probate, guardianship, mental health - Genesee County Probate Court at MiCOURT P25.
  • Small claims and landlord-tenant - 67th District Court civil division.

Public Access Framework for Genesee County Court Records

Michigan splits public access into two channels. Michigan FOIA (MCL 15.231) covers executive and county-government public bodies. Court records are governed mainly by Michigan Court Rule 8.119 and the SCAO records management standards. So a request to the Genesee County Clerk for an administrative document uses FOIA. A request to the 7th Circuit Court or 67th District Court for a case file uses the court records process. The two paths have different fees and different timing rules.

Under MCL 15.233, anyone except an incarcerated person can inspect or copy a public record held by a Michigan public body. Court rules apply to court files. The Circuit Legal Records Division retains case files consistent with SCAO standards and is the public access point for civil, criminal, and domestic filings in the 7th Circuit Court.

Note: Sealed orders, juvenile records, adoption records, and most mental-health probate records are restricted and need a court order or statutory standing to view.

Records That Are Sealed or Confidential in Genesee County

Michigan restricts several record categories. Juvenile records fall under MCL 712A.28. Adoption records fall under MCL 710.67. Mental-health information sits behind MCL 330.1748. Sealed cases require a judge's findings under MCR 8.119(I). Set-aside convictions are removed from public criminal history under MCL 780.621, though traffic-driving record entries may stay under MCL 780.621c.

To view a sealed Genesee County court record, a party generally has to file a motion in the originating court with a legal basis for access. Adoption files often go through a confidential intermediary. Mental-health treatment files in Probate are protected as a class. Even where a case caption is public, sensitive content inside the file may be redacted.
